Swallow hole 2018 3

The Swallow Hole

The button below shows the evolution of the swallow hole on Wilsons Creek near Springfield, Missouri. The first segment is April 8, 2017, when a whirlpool in the stream was discovered by Mike Kromrey, Joey Waitman and me.

The next segment shows John Madras and me standing next to the swallow hole on November 2, 2017.

Next you see Mickey Mouse in a daring run of the swallow hole in his canoe (Note: no rodents were harmed in filming this video. Notice the wire attached to the canoe to pull Mickey from the jaws of certain death).

The last segment, on February 8, 2018, shows a new, larger opening in the streambank connected to the swallow hole. At normal water levels in Wilsons Creek, the entire stream was diverted into the karst groundwater system. The flow resurfaces at Rader Spring, about two miles south.
